What denomination are you? « Thread Started on Oct 27, 2004, 8:54pm »
I'm curious. I know those who have accepted the Lord as Savior and giver of eternal life are going to be in Heaven, and that means the Presbyterian (God's Frozen Chosen) as well as the Pentecostal (Holy Rollers) are gonna be sitting side by side praising the Lord for eternity.
But I know that we are an opinionated bunch too. And we believe and we tick for tack and so we're a bunch of different denominations.
What's yours? And when you tell us that, can you tell us something that sets you aside from others, like maybe one of your church's beliefs that you know another doesn't have.

First of all, it has to be said that the denominational tag that we wear on our chest is man made. GOD looks past that tag into the heart, the seat of our very being, to see what and who we are.
Those who have, by The Spirit's wooing, been drawn to The Savior, believed what The Word says about who Jesus really was, is, and what HE did on GOD's creation's behalf. And then accepted HIS free gift of eternal life. Are all going to Heaven. No matter what denomination we are.
And conversely, no salvation experience no Heaven!! No matter what denomination!!
That being said. I am am a Baptist. Now you might think that that is enough to say who I am. But after years of believing that Baptist distinctives were what set us apart from other denominations. UNTRUE!! Baptist distinctives many times tell what make us different from other Baptists.
Free Will, Seventh Day, Conservative, American, Reformed, Regular, and others. Within these groups you will find those who worship on Sunday, some on Saturday. Some beleive in the verbal inspired, GOD breathed scripture, others don't. Some are Areminian, some are Calvinistic, or even hyper-Calvanistic when it comes to election. And on and on. THAT being said, I am a regular Baptist.
So the best that I can do to explain is to share a little about Baptists and our Articles of Faith. And let you compare with what you know of the others.
The title Baptist was not one that the group used to describe themselves but rather a term used by others. Steming from the refusal to baptize infants and baptized only the saved. In a general sense Baptists are not Protestants. They were not part of The Reformation. The Baptists started afterward. And are considered independent and part of the free-church movement.
I have a five page long listing of the Articles of Faith. But encapsulated they would say that we are Baptist because we believe in:
B-Bible Authority (II Peter 1:21) (It is authentic, sufficent, verbally and plenarily inspired of GOD.) A-Autonomy of the Local Church (Matt. 17:8) (A local body of immersed believers. United in a covenant of faith.) P-Priesthood of the Believers (I Peter 2:9) T-Two Ordinances - Baptism (Acts 2:41) (By immersion as a outward sign of the inward conversion.) - Communion I Corinth.11: 23-25) (As a commemoration of HIS death.) I-Individual Soul Liberty (Romans 14:5 and 12) S- Saved Church membership (Acts 2:47) T-Two Offices-Pastor (Acts 20:28) -Deacon (I Tim. 3:13) S- Separation of Church and State (Matt. 22:21)
We believe that there is one True GOD, infinite Spirit,Creator and Ruler over all.
We believe in The Holy Spirit. A divine person of The GODHEAD and of the same nature. HE was active in creation. HE restrains the evil one. HE convicts of sin. HE bears witness of The truth. He is the agent of the new birth, HE seals, endues, guides, teaches an oh so much more.
We believe in the reality of The Devil.
We believe that the Biblical account of creation is retelling of history.
We believe man was created in innocence and fell. And we are sinners by his sin.
We believe in the virgin birth of The Savior.
We believe that salvation of sinners is divinely initiated.
We beleive that salvation takes place when a sinner of his or her own volition accepts GOD's grace.
We believe that a sinner is justified before GOD by the judicial act of HIS declaring us so because of the righteousness imputed to us because of Jesus paying the penalty.
We believe that we are continually set apart by the ministry of The Holy Spirit.
We believe that we who are truly born again are kept by GOD, The Father for Jesus Christ. (Phil.1:6, John 10:28 and 29, Rom. 8:35-39, Jude 1)
We believe to be in obedience to The Word we must be separate from the world system and eccesiastical apostasy.
We believe that civil government is of divine appointment. We are to pray and obey those over us. Except in those things opposed to the will of The Lord.
We believe in the sovereign selection of Israel as GOD's covenant peoples. Though rejected and dispersed for disobedience and the rejection of Christ. She will be saved as a nation at The Lord's return.
We believe in the pre-millenial rapture of the church. That it could occur at any moment. That the dead in Christ will be raise first. Then those alive will follow. And all will receive our resurrection bodies. On Earth the seven years of tribuation will occur. To be followed by defeat of GOD's enemies and the 1,000 year reign of Christ in power from the throne of David.
We believe that there is a radical difference between good (righteous) and evil (unrighteous). The good being made righteous by Christ's blood. The evil being rejected and bound for a Christless eternity in Hell. For we do believe in a literal lake of fire reserved for the wicked.
In HIM, Bill

Excellent.. that's what I wanted to know too. Thanks for that Bill.
How bout others denominations? Do you have that kind of info on them?
This is purely curiousity for me, for I agree the distinction we make is also man-made. I know what's gonna get me into Heaven, and that thank the Lord, there is only ONE way to do so.

Great post, Bill. I am also a regular Baptist. I think you said it all. The only thing that I could add to that, is that is seems that we have a meal for every possible occasion. Every time we turn around, we are having a banquet!
